Finding the Form –
exploring natural forms through sculptural ceramics
With Melanie
Hopwood
4 Thursday Evenings | March 1, 8, 15, 22 | 18.45 - 21.15 |
Curving shells, twisting
branches, spiky seed pods – take some inspiration from all things natural
to begin or continue your ceramic journey. Develop a rhythm to your clay
work by using the ancient hand-building techniques of pinching and
coiling, learn how to make structured forms using the ‘slab-building’
technique and explore the myriad of ways that clay can be textured using
fingers, tools, found objects and your own clay ‘stamps’. Discover
different ways to develop your idea and extract interesting elements from
the natural forms around you through simple drawings, photography or
collage. See how other artists achieve a harmony between form and surface
finish and begin to discover the possibilities of underglazes, oxides
and glazes for yourself. Combine a number of the techniques to create one
or more sculptural forms, vessels or wall-pieces. Melanie will fire
your work during the course and pieces glazed at the final session
will then be glaze fired and ready for you to collect one week later.
