All things Oriental: Mixed Media Easter School
With Mandy Pattullo

Thursday to Sunday | April 12, 13, 14, 15| 10.00 – 16.00 |

Japanese and Chinese decorative arts will be the starting point for this intensive 4 day course.  You will be able to have a go at some unusual paint and print techniques using dyes, bleach and resists to copy the gorgeous patterns found in Kimonos and on ceramics. You will be shown how to build up multi layered responses that incorporate collage and printed ephemera. Learn a little about repeat pattern and design your own wallpaper or fabric using lino blocks. Have a go at drawing oriental flowers with pen and ink and emulate Chinese brush painting through painterly monotype. We will look at the Japanese-inspired work of Elizabeth Blackadder, the surface designer approach of textiles artists Joan Schulze and Cas Holmes and the prints of Hokusai and Utamaro among others. Lots to learn but hopefully you will also be able to pursue your own ideas and develop a very individual mixed media response to this inspirational subject.
