Horsley Printmakers is just a
few miles from Cherryburn - the birthplace of Thomas Bewick. Wood
engraving was Thomas Bewick’s passion. Inspiration for his work came from
his home and the surrounding countryside. You can learn more about this
fascinating form of printmaking at Horsley Printmakers this September with
Chris Daunt (an elected member of The Society of Wood Engravers) who will
be passing on his extensive knowledge and skills in this medium.
Wood Engraving is a highly
detailed form of relief printmaking, capable of exquisite nuance and
detail, with rich, velvety blacks. The technique involves engraving on
highly polished end grain blocks with a variety of gravers, and printing
from the relief surface. Great care must be taken in the preparation of
the drawing and the engraving of the block, but the results are always
worth the effort. The method of teaching employed here is well tried. The
methodical approach will serve students well in the pursuit of a medium
which is simple but requires the right methodology.
Chris Daunt studied both Fine
Art and English Literature and has worked as an illustrator for over 20
years, using wood engraving as his principle medium. Commissioned work
includes illustrations for The Folio Society, The Times, BBC publications
and numerous other books. Recently he has been making engraving blocks for
other artists such as Angie Lewin, Sue Scullard and Harry Brockway. He
teaches regularly. He is an elected member of The Society of Wood
Engravers. Take a look at his website gallery page to see other examples
of wood engraving.
